The teacher training school first started functioning at the Govt. Boys High School campus in Port Blair in August 1958 with 20 in-service teachers as trainees. In 1975, the name of the school was changed to Teachers Training Institute (T.T.I).
Following a centrally sponsored scheme by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the institution was upgraded to a District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) on March 3, 1993, to serve the entire Union Territory. The institute was established on a 7.5-acre site in Garacharama, shifting permanently to this present campus on September 11, 1998.
Course & Affiliation: The Pre-Service Teacher Education Wing of DIET offers a Two-year D.El.Ed. Certificate Course. It is officially recognized by the National Council of Teacher Education (NCTE) and is affiliated with the State Institute of Education.
Admission Eligibility
- Candidates must have passed the +2 level from a recognized Senior Secondary Board with at least 50% marks in theory.
- A relaxation of 5% in marks is provided for ST candidates.
- Candidates must have at least three primary school subjects at the senior secondary level (across Language, Environmental, and Skill-Based groups).

Fee Structure & Financial Aid
Selected candidates are required to deposit their annual fees as follows:
- Hostellers: Rs. 2080/-
- Non-Hostellers: Rs. 980/-
- Stipend: Stipends are paid as per Government of India rules to eligible candidates.
Campus Infrastructure & Facilities
- Library: A well-organized library with a vast collection of books, periodicals, newspapers, magazines, and educational journals.
- Laboratories: Features an Audio Visual Unit with projectors and TVs, an NCTE-standard Psychology Lab, and a Science Laboratory equipped with necessary tools and computers.
- Residential Hostels: Accommodation is provided through the Sri Aurobindo Men's Hostel (60 capacity) and the Sarojini Naidu Women's Hostel (60 capacity).
- Sports: The institute features a playground and a Mini Stadium for the all-round development of trainees.
- Demonstration Schools: The institute is tied to multiple government schools across Port Blair for pre-internship and intensive practice teaching programs.
Evaluation & Scheme of Studies
The D.El.Ed program includes 220 working days per year (6 hours/day). A minimum of 75% attendance is mandatory to appear in examinations. Minimum passing criteria include 40% in each theory paper, 50% in practicals, and 45% in aggregate (sessional and terminal exams combined).
