Overview of Tagore Government College of Education (TGCE)
The TGCE has been growing ever since its inception in 1981. The college started by providing a platform for graduates and postgraduates passing out of JNRM, Port Blair, and Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabunder, to seek a professional course and secure employment. There were 50 trainees in the first batch of the college, and it is a matter of pride that many officers and teachers in the Education Department, other departments of the A&N Administration, and Central Government Departments are its alumni.
Affiliation and Recognition
In 1987-88, the affiliation of this college was shifted to Pondicherry Central University. Following the establishment of the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in 1993 as a statutory authority, the Govt. B.Ed. College received its recognition from the NCTE in 1997.
Renaming and Expansion
On the occasion of the Golden Jubilee of Indiaโs Independence in August 1998, the Govt. B.Ed. College was re-christened as Tagore Govt. College of Education (TGCE). In the same year, a 34-bed โRani Lakshmi Hostel for Women Teacher Traineesโ was inaugurated for women trainees hailing from inter-islands. The college moved to a new building in April 2004, equipped with all the necessary facilities for teacher training.
Academic Programs
A significant milestone was achieved in 2003-04 with the introduction of 4-year integrated courses in Computer Science and English, with Mathematics being added later. These integrated programsโBachelor of Science Education (B.Sc. B.Ed. for Mathematics and Computer Science) and Bachelor of Arts Education (B.A. B.Ed.)โare designed to prepare competent teachers for the secondary school level. They incorporate appropriate components of General Education, Subject Specialization, and Professional Education.
Following the revision of NCTE Regulations in 2014, a two-year B.Ed. degree program was introduced in accordance with the new norms. The college also offers four-year integrated courses in:
- B.Sc. B.Ed. Computer Science
- B.Sc. B.Ed. Mathematics
- B.A. B.Ed. English
- B.A. B.Ed. Hindi
- B.A. B.Ed. History
Note: The total intake for these programs is 100 trainees per year.
A Hub of Activity
The TGCE, which started as a tiny sapling in 1981, has grown into a massive institution with branches extending in various directions. Beyond its core programs, the college serves as a center for conducting various examinations, including Sainik School, RIMC, SSC, and distance education programs for universities like the University of Madras and Alagappa University.
