Understanding Andaman Distances

Distances in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands are measured in two completely different ways depending on your destination:

  • Sea Routes (Nautical Miles): Travel between Port Blair, Havelock, and Neil is done via sea. 1 Nautical Mile equals 1.852 Kilometers. Ferries travel at different knots (speeds), which is why a 38 NM journey takes 1.5 hours on a cruise but 2.5 hours on a government ferry.
  • Land Routes (Kilometers): Travel to North and Middle Andaman (Baratang, Rangat, Diglipur) is done via the Andaman Trunk Road (ATR). This road passes through dense forests and tribal reserves where speed limits are strictly enforced (usually 40 km/h).
  • No Direct Cross-Island Routes: You cannot travel directly from Havelock to Baratang or Diglipur. Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair) acts as the central transit hub for all major island connections.
