DSS Introduces New Chartered Ferry Services to Strengthen Inter-Island Connectivity

The Directorate of Shipping Services (DSS), Andaman & Nicobar Administration, has launched a new initiative to improve maritime connectivity across the islands by introducing chartered passenger ferry services. As part of the initiative, MV Saroj, a 50-passenger vessel, successfully completed its maiden voyage on the Long Islandโ€“Yeratta route.

The inaugural service was flagged off by senior officials of the Directorate of Shipping Services at Long Island. The new ferry service aims to provide safer, faster, and more reliable transportation for residents living in remote island regions.

DSS has also announced that additional chartered ferry services connecting Diglipur and Nancowry will be introduced shortly, further expanding transportation options and improving access between distant islands.

According to the Directorate, all chartered vessels will function under the direct supervision of DSS and will strictly follow the department's operational guidelines, safety standards, and approved sailing schedules. This ensures that passengers receive dependable and secure ferry services throughout the year.

The administration has clarified that the introduction of chartered ferries will not result in any increase in passenger fares. Existing government-approved ticket rates will continue to remain in force, making the service affordable for both local residents and visitors.

Officials stated that the expansion of chartered ferry services is part of the administration's ongoing efforts to strengthen inter-island transportation infrastructure, improve accessibility, and support the socio-economic development of remote island communities.

With the launch of MV Saroj and the upcoming services for Diglipur and Nancowry, DSS continues to enhance maritime connectivity while ensuring passenger safety, operational efficiency, and affordable travel across the Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
